The clients purchased their small cottage just north of the UT campus in the 1990s, and decided recently to update the house and add some square footage for more comfortable entertaining. Sustainable design was the primary concern, encompassing the use of green materials, with the modest goal of achieving 1300 sf of conditioned space. The addition takes advantage of a steeply pitched roof to provide attic access through a loft via a library ladder. Windows in the loft allow it to act as a thermal chimney, drawing breezes up through the family room to naturally ventilate the space. The addition is conventionally framed and insulated with a soy-based foam insulation. Floors in the addition are of recycled long-leaf pine, as is all window and door trim. Other materials include painted hardi-board on the exterior, recycled glass tile, slate tile, and a walnut bar and counter trim harvested from a fallen walnut tree on the property. The project was a design-build project, and was selected for the Heritage Society of Austin Tour and the Cool House Tour in 2006. |
