This home studio and gallery for a painter takes as its starting point the simple desire to bring northern light into the interior of the volume. The roof plane pitches toward the north to allow clerestory views of trees and diffuse light. The roof folds over at a right angle to become the southern wall of the studio. This creates a void space between the angled exterior and plumb interior walls, which aids in insulating the building and allows windows and doors to appear as if they were carved out of the solid volume. The end walls are clad in painted cementitious panels, and a cement-board bathroom cantilevers out of the building to protect an outdoor shower below.
